Understanding the meaning of 7 Chakras: A Simple Guide

Understanding 7 Chakras
Chakra System in a Human Body

I wanted to talk about chakras today — something I genuinely enjoy talking about.

It took me quite some time to actually understand them in a way that could be applied in real life, not just as a theory.

So in this post, let’s understand what exactly chakras are — in very simple terms — what our scriptures say about these energy centers, and how you can start identifying where your own blockages might be.

What Are Chakras, Really?

In Sanskrit, the word chakra means “wheel.” These are energy centers in our subtle body where prana (life force) flows.

Our scriptures mention not just seven chakras above the spine, but also seven below the spine.

The seven above correspond to higher realms of consciousness — more refined, spiritual vibrations.

The seven below represent the lower realms — lower-minded tendencies and even lower astral beings.

Every chakra, whether above or below, is like a realm of consciousness. It’s not just humans — all beings vibrate at different chakra levels.

When someone is constantly fearful, angry, jealous, or hateful, their awareness is often stuck below the Muladhara chakra.

But once we start purifying our mind and raising our awareness, we move upward — into more positive and divine vibrations.

The Entry Point: Muladhara Chakra (Root Chakra)

The Muladhara or Root Chakra is the foundation of the entire chakra system.

This is where your soul’s upward journey truly begins — the point where your spiritual evolution starts.

Muladhara is governed by Lord Ganesha, who we always worship first before any puja. Spiritually, he represents the one who removes obstacles and introduces you to higher realms of consciousness.

When Lord Ganesha protects your Muladhara, he’s essentially protecting you from the darkness — fear, confusion, and instability of mind.

When the Muladhara is Imbalanced:

You may experience constant anxiety, fear of the future, or inability to stay present.

When It’s Balanced:

You feel safe, grounded, and present in the moment.

You trust life and feel supported by existence itself.

This chakra is all about being in the present moment.

Because when your awareness wanders into the past or future, you lose connection with time and space — the here and now.

The moment you observe your thoughts and return to presence, your Muladhara activates.

Swadhisthana Chakra (Sacral Chakra)

Just above the Muladhara lies the Swadhisthana, or Sacral Chakra — the center of your reasoning, creativity, and emotional intelligence.

Only when you are grounded in the present moment (Root Chakra) can your intellect truly function.

Otherwise, you’re just reacting from memory and past conditioning.

When It’s Imbalanced:

You may struggle with emotional instability, guilt, overindulgence, or creative blocks.

When It’s Balanced:

You feel creative, emotionally expressive, and connected to your inner flow.

People who can stay observant and detached from their emotions, while still expressing them gracefully, are often balanced in this chakra.

Manipura Chakra (Solar Plexus Chakra)

Next is the Manipura, or Solar Plexus Chakra — located two inches above the navel.

This is your center of willpower and determination.

It’s governed by Lord Kartikeya (Murugan), the warrior energy within us.

This is where your self-confidence and discipline are born.

Willpower is simply the ability to bring your awareness back to what matters — again and again.

That’s why being present requires tremendous willpower.

When It’s Imbalanced:

You may feel powerless, lethargic, or overly controlling.

You may find yourself repeating negative patterns with determination — that’s negative willpower.

When It’s Balanced:

You feel strong, motivated, and capable of directing your mind consciously.

You take charge of your life and actions.

This chakra determines whether your energy flows upward into the spiritual realm or downward into material attachments.

Anahata Chakra (Heart Chakra)

Above Manipura is the Anahata, the Heart Chakra.

This is where understanding blossoms into compassion.

When you start meditating deeply and seeing things from a mountaintop view, your perception expands.

You no longer see life as black and white — you start understanding it from all angles.

This is called direct cognition — a state of insight where you are not biased by your memories or emotions.

When It’s Imbalanced:

You may feel resentment, emotional pain, or difficulty forgiving.

When It’s Balanced:

You naturally feel compassion, love, and forgiveness.

You can accept others as they are, without judgment.

Through understanding comes compassion, and through compassion comes forgiveness — and this opens the door to divine love.

Vishuddha Chakra (Throat Chakra)

Once forgiveness happens, energy moves up to the Vishuddha, the Throat Chakra — the center of divine love and expression.

This is where you begin to experience grace.

You feel guided by something higher, as if the universe is aligning things for you.

When It’s Imbalanced:

You might struggle with communication, self-expression, or feel unheard.

When It’s Balanced:

You express truth effortlessly and feel supported by divine timing.

This is also where synchronicities start appearing — signs that the divine is working through you.

Ajna Chakra (Third Eye Chakra)

Next comes the Ajna, or Third Eye Chakra — the seat of intuition and divine vision, governed by Lord Shiva.

At this level, you begin to see both the higher and lower realms simultaneously.

You gain insight into your soul’s purpose and start receiving intuitive guidance.

When It’s Imbalanced:

You may feel confused, overthink, or misuse your intuitive abilities.

When It’s Balanced:

You see truth clearly, trust your intuition, and align your actions with your higher purpose.

However, this chakra should not be forced open.

Without working through the lower chakras first, premature activation can lead to discomfort, psychic imbalance, or even kundalini disturbances.

So always rise gradually, not forcefully.

Sahasrara Chakra (Crown Chakra)

Finally, we reach the Sahasrara, the Crown Chakra — the lotus of a thousand petals.

This is where self-realization unfolds, where you experience oneness with the Divine.

At this point, there’s no “you” and “God” — there is only one consciousness.

Words fall short here because this is not something the mind can grasp; it’s something the soul experiences.

My Journey With the Chakras

For the longest time, I used to think,

“Oh, this is my creative chakra — this is where my creativity comes from!”

But then I wondered why I couldn’t sustain it.

It was because my lower chakras were still imbalanced.

I was still carrying fear, jealousy, and anger.

Until I worked on grounding and cleansing those patterns, my creativity couldn’t sustain itself.

That’s when I realized — true spiritual progress happens only when we rise gradually, through daily sadhana, awareness, and surrender.

Closing Thoughts

Your chakras are not abstract concepts. They’re reflections of your consciousness in daily life.

The way you respond, the emotions you feel, the choices you make — all reveal where your energy currently resides.

Through simple daily practices like meditation, devotion, forgiveness, and awareness, you can gently raise your vibration.

And as your awareness rises, life starts to unfold more harmoniously — as if the Divine itself is guiding every step.
