How to Come Out Of the Dark Night of the Soul

The Dark Night of the Soul is one of the most intense and confusing stages of spiritual awakening. It feels as if life has lost its light — everything that once gave meaning suddenly collapses. You may feel empty, disconnected, or even haunted by negativity.

I know this stage well because my own journey began with it. Looking back, I can now see it not as a punishment, but as a powerful initiation into a deeper connection with my soul.

In this blog, I’ll share what the Dark Night of the Soul is, how long it can last, what helped me personally, and the practices that can support anyone walking through this dark passage.

What Is the Dark Night of the Soul?

The phrase comes from the 16th-century mystic St. John of the Cross, who described a period of deep spiritual crisis where one feels abandoned by both God and life itself.

Today, many seekers use the term to describe the spiritual breakdown that precedes breakthrough — the stripping away of old beliefs, identities, and attachments so that something new can emerge.

My Own Experience

For me, the Dark Night of the Soul didn’t begin with visions or bliss — it began with my body.

I suddenly faced strong digestion issues. Food I once enjoyed became impossible to eat. At first, I didn’t understand that this was part of a deeper process, possibly even linked to Kundalini awakening.

Then one day, it was as if the ground gave way beneath me. I stopped everything and sank into what felt like a bottomless pit. Negativity surrounded me, and no matter what I did, I couldn’t escape it.

Despite having a good job, a loving husband, and a stable life, I felt utterly miserable. It was then that I realized: no external success, knowledge, or strength could save me.

That realization led me to the next step — surrender.

How Long Does the Dark Night Last?

This is one of the most common questions, and the truth is: there is no fixed timeline.

  • For me, the darkest phase lasted about one week, though the build-up had been unfolding for three to four weeksbeforehand.

  • For others, it may last months or even years. Some experience it as a single intense period, while others revisit it multiple times in cycles.

  • The length often depends on factors like resistance, trauma, willingness to let go, and whether you have supportive practices or guidance.

So while my own Dark Night was brief, I’ve seen others go through longer processes. It’s deeply individual.

What Helped Me

The turning point for me was surrender. I didn’t even know what surrender was at the time, I simply reached a point where I gave up control and let a higher power hold me.

Immediately, grace entered. The heaviness lifted, and I experienced profound bliss and connection. My intuition sharpened, synchronicities appeared everywhere, and meditation became a doorway to peace.

From then on, surrender became a practice I return to often.

What You Can Do in the Dark Night of the Soul

If you are going through this stage, know that you are not alone. Many seekers have walked this path. Here are practices that can help ease the process:

  1. Surrender and Acceptance

Stop resisting the experience. Instead of asking “Why me?” try softening into “This is happening — and it will teach me something.”

  1. Spiritual Practice

Meditation, prayer, or simply sitting in silence can reconnect you with your deeper self. Even if you don’t feel anything at first, keep showing up.

  1. Self-Compassion and Rest

Take care of your body. Rest more than usual, eat nourishing foods, and treat yourself gently. Healing often requires physical stillness.

  1. Journaling and Reflection

Write down your thoughts and emotions. The Dark Night brings unconscious material to the surface; journaling helps you process it consciously.

  1. Support System

Seek guidance from a teacher, therapist, or spiritual community if the intensity feels overwhelming. Having someone remind you that this stage is temporary can be lifesaving.

  1. Nature and Simplicity

Spend time outdoors, walk barefoot, breathe fresh air. Nature grounds and restores balance when your mind feels chaotic.

  1. Creative Expression

Paint, sing, dance, write — any form of expression helps release what cannot be explained in words.

What Not to Do

  • Don’t try to force your way out. The Dark Night ends when it has served its purpose, not when you demand it to.

  • Don’t isolate completely. While solitude helps, total disconnection can make the process heavier.

  • Don’t judge yourself. Feeling lost or broken doesn’t mean you’re failing — it means transformation is happening.

The Light Beyond the Darkness

The Dark Night of the Soul is not the end — it’s a beginning. It strips away illusions so that your true essence can shine through.

I often remind my students: the deeper the darkness, the brighter the light that follows.

If you’re in this stage now, trust the process. Keep surrendering. Stay connected to simple practices. The night may feel endless, but dawn always comes.
